SESSION 2

Creating the illusion of Depth in Art Quilts

Discover a variety of ways to create the illusion of depth in a two-dimensional plane (in our case, a quilt.) Along with fabric, students will work in a collage style, using mixed media such as paints, papers and found objects to create a series of small studies. We will paint, sew, fuse and glue, concentrating on design principles such as overlapping, placement, size, value, and focus. In the end, you will leave with a better sense of command over how to create a feeling of three dimensions, depth and foreground within your two-dimensional art.

Art Journal Workshop with Deborah Fell

$200.00

Friday – Sunday, April 12 – 14, 2024; 9am-4pm

This art journaling workshop complements SebARTS’ “Pulp” Book Arts exhibition.

Each student will create an art journal book. Any materials can be used–cloth, paper, paint….and anything else you can think of. This mixed media journal workshop has no rules so nothing can be done in a wrong way. Collaboration, rather than competition, is the goal.

Students will decide on a theme and a mantra to guide design ideas. Bring your own supplies as needed for your independent project.

Artist Rising Retreat

June 16 – 20, 2024

Perfectly Imperfect Mark Making

This retreat-like workshop focuses on slowing down and relishing in process rather than product.  Learning to celebrate imperfection is a prevailing theme.  Small compositions will be created with an emphasis on how to use the hand stitch as a major design mark making element.   So, grab a bag of fabric scraps and your favorite hand sewing tools, and jump on board.  This is not a technique workshop where you learn how to hand stitch.  The focus is on process and using the stitch line as a mark making design element.  Other unconventional goals are to learn to color outside the lines and celebrate imperfection. The stitch marks are the brush strokes that make the composition complete.  Students will explore personal mark making preferences, with the power of parallel play in groups.

Held at Connecticut River Valley Inn, Glastonbury, CT

Your Retreat Includes:
5 days and 4 nights (most workshops start on Sunday eve at 6 pm with a meet and greet and light bites but be sure to check the dates of each individual instructor). All inclusive, with freshly made healthy breakfast, a light salad lunch and chef prepared dinner using local and seasonal ingredients as much as possible.

Mindful Mixed Media

In creating an art quilt, our primary component is cloth.  What about other beautiful elements like handmade art paper that are not traditionally incorporated with cloth?  Learn to modify and stabilize unexpected materials that can be used alongside cloth in building an art quilt’s surface design. The goal of this workshop is to mindfully learn to incorporate mixed media materials with art quilting to increase texture and surface possibilities without compromising the surface stability of the quilt. Progressive mark making studies, using paint, gel medium, paper, and unconventional materials, will lay the foundation to create a more dimensional surface design on fabric, which can be incorporated into your work.  This mixed media play workshop will allow you to step gently out of your comfort zone in a collaborative and supportive environment.
